Timbers
All timbers we use are carefully selected from sustainable managed sources such as FSC ( Forest Stewardship Council) authenticated.
Wood is a natural material and as such we expect a degree of variation and movement, however in any given piece of furniture we will match the grain to ensure a balanced colour throughout. |

Oak We use English and European oak. It is a very sturdy and durable traditional material with a rich and open grain.

Pippy Oak Characterful oak that has more knots and greater variation in the grain.

Fumed Oak Raw oak is exposed to ammonia fumes, which speed up the natural darkening process of the wood.

Walnut Black walnut is a rich dark wood with a tight close grain and is ideal for veneering. It is particularly suited to our cleaner urban ranges.

Ash English and European ash can range in colour from rich dark olive to clean white. In the main we use ‘white ash’. It is open grained and suitable for use in all forms of furniture both solid and veneered. It is excellent for laminating and steam bending.

Sycamore Sycamore is a pale delicate English hardwood, with a tight close grain. We tend to use it for finer pieces.

Wood Finishes
all finishes can be cleaned with a damp cloth and mild detergent and buffed with a soft dry cloth.

Timbertect This is a form of oil that contains a hardening agent, so it has all the benefit of an oiled finish but is more durable.

Clear lacquer This is a hard wearing semi-matt finish that needs minimal maintenance.

Mocha This is a stain treatment used on oak to give it a dark rich appearance, which is then finished with a clear lacquer.

Metals
We use a variety of metals and have revived traditional specialist skills in the working of zinc and pewter.

Zinc We use sheet zinc, which is wrapped around a wooden core and patinated. zinc is susceptible to staining which over time further enhances its rich patina.

Pewter Unlike pewters of old with their high levels of lead, modern pewter is predominantly tin. We use this in a similar way to zinc, but give it a highly polished finish. Whilst pewter doesn’t stain, it is prone to scratching. It needs a great deal of care, but the results are gorgeous! The scratches can be removed with a lot of hard work and polishing paste, or left to add to the character of the piece, ageing in a similar way to a well used silver platter. |

Leather / Suede
Most leathers can be cleaned with a damp cloth. Part of the beauty of leather or suede is the subtle variations across a hide, and the way it ages gracefully. We use mainly aniline dyed leathers, which are less harmful to the environment in the way they are produced.

Linen
We have chosen a 100% natural linen for our upholstered ranges. It is very durable, giving a lovely soft and relaxed feel. Each piece can be covered in the customer’s own material, and the meterage needed is shown on the price list.
